What is Conflict Resolution?
"Peace is not the absence, nor the management, of conflict but rather the constructive prevention of conflict and promotion of human rights, equality, diversity, and compassion."
-Teachers Without Borders
Now that you've read Why it matters, let's talk about what we mean by "conflict resolution."
Conflict has been a part of human life for as long as our species has been on this planet. Every human culture has developed its own methods of resolving conflicts...some violent, some not; some informal, some enforced by authority. From a parent sitting their two children down to make them apologize to each other, to a judge presiding over a legal case, to two friends working out a disagreement about money, resolving conflict is an essential part of what makes us human.
Modern non-violent conflict resolution techniques originate from the post-World War II era. At a time when people, groups, and nations were looking for new ways to prevent wars and stave off violence, scholars, activists, and others began to formalize conflict resolution strategies.
Today, conflict resolution is practiced all over the globe, in numerous forms, as an essential part of the peace process and as a vital interpersonal skill.
